Carl Haarnack: I didn't come here to go hunting for you. Resistance and Rebellion in 18th Century Suriname

By 1667, following the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667), after which Suriname came under permanent Dutch colonial rule, African slaves were already showing signs of re-sistance against their oppressors. These maroons attacked nearby plantations to obtain food, weapons, tools, gunpowder, and women. These at-tacks nearly caused the collapse of the colony in the mid-18th century.Weiterlesen

These maroons attacked nearby plantations to obtain food, weapons, tools, gunpowder, and women. These at-tacks nearly caused the collapse of the colony in the mid-18th century. However, there were also other forms of resistance against the slave society, such as sabotage, arson, murder, and legal action. In this lecture, we will explore different forms of resistance and rebellion, focusing on how resistance against slavery was articulated and how the self-empowerment of the enslaved was pursued. Carl Haarnack studied political science at the university of Amsterdam.           Weniger lesen
